ECU Remapping
Engine Control Unit (ECU) Remapping is a type of service to vehicles which provides it with increased power and extra performance. The engine control unit can be considered as the heart of the vehicle. For instance, this unit controls aspects of the vehicle such as the air and fuel ratio for controlling the flow of fuel, the ignition timing which protects the engine from destruction, the idle speed which allows for cruise control and top speed limitations, variable valve timing which controls the flow of air, and the electronic valve control which provides for pollution reduction in hybrid driving vehicles. The items listed are just a few of the common mappable components. Other’s may include but are not limited to the timing of an engine’s RPM, water temperature, transient fueling, and low fuel pressure modifier.
There are different forms or ways of engine control unit (ECU) remapping. One method is the modern remapping which is simply done by connecting the vehicle to a diagnostic port at the mechanic shop. A second method is programmable engine control units, which is considered a special category for ECU’s. This method allows for the ECU to be connected to a laptop computer and programmed while the engine is currently running. The programmable ECU includes making changes to the turbocharger, the intercooler, and a conversion of the exhaust system to work off alternative fuels. A third or more advanced type of remapping Dumfries is called a standalone or race ECU. This is more for racecar drivers. One important note to take into consideration when having a car remapped is the fact that there will be a strong need for using a high octane fuel in order to keep the engine from being damaged.
